When I was looking for a crochet stocking free pattern on Pinterest as a total stocking newbie, I stumbled across this post by Hookfully – The Free Alpine Christmas Stocking Crochet Pattern. While there is a paid version with photos and no ads, I decided to try out the free version and see how far I could get.
I was nervous to try a pattern with no photo reference, especially for this stitch. I had never attempted the alpine stitch before, but at it’s core it was really simple. The pattern was listed as “intermediate level”, and I guess I’d consider myself intermediate, but I really didn’t have any issues following the instructions as written.
Crochet supplies I used:
Grey Yarn – Impeccable by Loops and Threads, True Grey
Pink Yarn – Impeccable by Loops and Threads, Soft Rose
Blue Yarn – Impeccable by Loops and Threads, Royal
5mm Crochet Hook
Small scissors
Darning Needle
Notes on the Stocking Crochet Pattern:
- I used a 5mm hook, but the hook size listed under “Hook Sizes” says 6mm.
- I counted my stitches for almost every row, especially when I was crocheting into the raw edge.
- This pattern is pretty forgiving of mistakes, especially around the toe and heel. If you realize you’re a stitch off or where you should be, a quick increase fixes everything. No need to frog.
Overall, I highly recommended this pattern. It could be a good first intermediate pattern for someone who wants to take a step outside of the beginner patterns they’re getting used to. Not too difficult to follow without photos, but still a fun challenge if you haven’t created something similar before.
